A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
